Proper hair care isn’t just about the hair…it all starts with a healthy scalp.
Japanese head spas are a common experience for Japanese women, who swear by these treatments as solutions to dry scalp, dandruff, and even hair loss. Massaging your scalp promotes blood circulation and lymphatic drainage beneath our scalp, that helps balance the oil production and regenerative properties of our scalp that produces newer and stronger hair. If you’re new to Japanese head spas, we’ll walk you through the main touch points so you know what kind of goodness to look forward too!
In NYC, Tomoko Shima is one of the best salons to go to for an authentic experience, and with the perfect place down, I felt even luckier to go on a rainy day when my hair felt flat and damp. I was greeted at the door and had my belongings and coat was hung up, I was then escorted to my chair and offered water.
The first step was a combing to smooth out my hair and a careful look and feel of my scalp to see what kind of product would be best for my head and hair condition. My stylist, Grace, applied a cleansing serum throughout the layers of my hair, which also left an amazing cooling sensation on the surface of my scalp. She began to massage away at my head and neck, as I nearly drifted into sleep. With my eyes closed, the ambient music of the salon, and the light pressure of skilled hands on my head, I felt transported from the busy NYC streets just outside the door, to a quiet oasis of an island spa (it also helps that I was alone in the salon with Grace, and everything was so perfectly tranquil!) I opened my eyes just once and that was when we reached the end of this first part, when a detangling brush glided smoothly through my hair and gently grazed the surface of my scalp.
For the second part, we headed off to the sinks where I laid back and let Grace work her magic. She lathered up an amazing smelling shampoo and conditioner formulated to deep cleanse the scalp, all the while, massaging down my head and neck. This rinsing portion took about 10 minutes, and I wished it would never end! With the warm water and all the foamy bubbles, it felt as if my head was floating on a sweet-smelling cloud. Grace was also very attentive, making sure the water temperature didn’t get too hot and putting a warmed-up cushion beneath my neck so I’m comfortable throughout the entire process.
I felt my spa treatment coming to a close soon as we returned to the styling chair for this final part. Luckily, there was still much too look forward too. With freshly cleaned hair, Grace performed her last massage and rub, with no corners missed, down the neck and to the shoulders and arms. I felt my upper body totally loosen up as she, with the perfect pressure, kneaded out my stiff spots. Grace ended this amazing experience by drying my hair and applying a leave-in tonic to my scalp and hair that protects my hair for the rest of the day.
I looked in the mirror, and my hair just looked and felt softer right off the bat. I felt like I woke up from a great night’s sleep, with my back straightened out and shoulders opened up. And all within 30-minutes, which means this is the perfect way to relax for busy New Yorkers.
Getting yourself pampered doesn’t mean you have to shell out top prices, nor does it mean an entire day’s worth of spa treatments, (as amazing as that sounds)! You can totally reinvigorate yourself with just a simple, but thorough, head spa experience. It's toe-tingling, possibly sleep-inducing, but all-around relaxing from start to finish!
